Fragments of Absence
I wonder whether perfume designers
aren't right - but on the wrong track.
Nuzzled into your neck
each breath increased my desire.
After our last day together
I could smell you on my skin.
My hand, near my face,
your scent brought good dreams.
***
Our parting - goodbyes, promises to call,
your wave.
Then you, receding, compact, neat
in flannel, leather, worn sneakers,
your presense so quickly absent.
How could you spring
so blithely
into my mind.
Retrograde Athena,
I cannot shake you out.
***
I thought I knew
your tastes so well,
my gifts were always
timely, desired, appreciated.
Then, mistakenly,
I gave you my heart.
***
Heartbreak's a compound fracture,
sharp fragments tearing flesh
from inside out.
***
Like the ghost of a sailor
Rising from buried treasure,
Through your picture
Memories haunt me.
***
Lover - if I write your name
you will chrystalize in my mind
shredding already tattered composure.
Mages knew the power of names,
yours, on my tongue, brings to my mind
your tongue and what you do to me.
